The 4 Key Ingredients for a Thriving Company

How would you define a successful business owner? Is it by how much the business makes, the products or services it provides, its longevity?
The three top concerns to business owners are:

  1. Making more money.
  2. Having more time.
  3. Having productive employees.

However, successful business owners know that they are as successful as their people. Successful business owners know and understanding this fact: their success is derived from employees who stay motivated, focused, and successful in the roles they play within the company.

However, employees are only as good as the behavior of the business owner. The behavior of the business owner is the key to business success or failure.

Successful business owners know and understand three other critical keys to having a thriving company that also impacts the productivity of their employees: a positive attitude, a solid business plan and strategy, and discipline. Without these elements, a business cannot grow nor can the people employed by it.

Defining the Behaviors of Successful Business Owners

1. Successful business owners take ownership of problems.

Business owners cannot pretend to know all the answers and look for guidance in the solving of problems and issues, no matter whom or what created the problem to begin with.

While an individual employee made has made an error, it is up to the business owner to have made sure a procedure was defined and understood in the first place.

Additionally, successful business owners are consistent in showing appreciation toward employees who do a good job.

2. Successful business owners know that their attitude towards others dictates success.

Having the proper attitude when working with employees, vendors, accountants, and other people who are involved with the business is just as important as managing the business---if not more so.

The way that a business owner interacts with others has a direct impact on the attitude of the business’ employees as well as others.

3.Successful business owners have a solid plan and strategy. This helps in determining who to hire as well as keeping the business on track.

A solid business plan and strategy involves more than dollars and cents; it also defines what success means to the business owner. If success means simply the acquisition of more money, this attitude will be reflected in how employees and vendors are treated.

Likewise, if the meaning of success is determined by the happiness and consequent productivity of a business’ employees, the business has an open door to further growth.

4. Successful business owners show discipline in their behavior.

Once a business plan and strategy are established, confusion can arise if the business owner does not adhere to the structure of the strategy and implement policies for the good of all.

A strategy can be comprised of the business’ mission statement and should be revisited on a regular basis in order to stay focused.

Important Points to Remember for Successful Business-Owner Behaviors:

  • Realize that the business can only be as successful as the people who run and produce for it.
  • Understand the power of having the right attitude when working with others.
  • Create a business plan and strategy that stays “alive” by being revisited regularly and updated as necessary.
  • Be disciplined to follow the business plan and strategy and practice what it preaches.
