10 Ways to Save Space in Your Home Office

Professionals who work at home need space for a variety of items, especially a desk or dedicated work space, a place to store files for past, present, and future projects, and the electronic items required to do a good job.

Finding space for everything in your home office may be a challenge, but becoming organized is worth it.

You will be able to better manage your time and projects if you can quickly find the files or items you need. Use the following ideas as a starting point, and start claiming all of the space in your home office.

1. Drawers: Use the drawers in your desk for the most often used items, so you can lay your hands on what you need without getting up from your seat. Purchase inexpensive stackable plastic drawers—in colors to match your home office decor—and use them to store paperwork, electronics, and more.

2. Alcoves and built-ins: Find ways to compress your home office space. Instead of using an entire spare bedroom, work out of a well-designed alcove. You can also remove the doors from a closet to create a nook for your desk and computer without sacrificing space in the room.

3. Attics: Clean out your dusty attic and turn it into an inviting, out-of-the-way home office. If your attic isn't a candidate for a makeover, then use it to store your older files and projects. You will know where they are, but you won't trip over them every time you enter your home office.

4. Shelves: Some well-placed shelves can move your home office library off the floor, but still keep important reference material at hand.

5. Expanding desks: Purchase an expandable table and only use it at full size if necessary to lay out fabric, maps, or large drawings, depending on your business. Doing so will save you space, and also allow you to buy only one piece of furniture instead of two.

7. Repurpose some storage items: Remember that box you used to store your child's toys in? Repaint it and tuck it under the desk in your home office for some additional hidden storage.

8. Consider a corner desk: These L-shaped desks slide perfectly into the corner of a room, making them invaluable for the tiny home office, or office/guest room combo.

9. Closets: If you have too much closet space and not enough clothing, consider converting a walk-in closet into a home office. You can also use a walk-in for a handy storage, supply, or copier/printer room.

10. Chairs: Choose the best quality chair you can afford for your home office—you will be spending a lot of time in it. If you can, find a chair that is comfortable but streamlined, and slide it away when it is not in use. Unless you are planning on visitors or meeting clients, you only need a single chair for your home office.
