Marketing Plans Help You Plan for Success

Marketing is more than just advertising and promotion: make sure your plan is thorough and detailed.

When you are starting your own business, there are thousands of details that need attention.  You have to find a suitable location – or if working from home, you need the appropriate equipment and licensing – you need to order inventory, assess your competition and the market for your services, and you need to develop a sound marketing plan.  Marketing is more than just advertising and promotion. 

It also includes pricing, sales, public relations, packaging, distribution, product selection, and market research.  Taking care of all the details of starting a business can be overwhelming; but don’t forget to devote time to your marketing plan because it is a necessary component of your business’s success.

What exactly is a marketing plan?  It is a written document that details a plan of action for your business’s marketing strategy.  This means that marketing specifics are planned out and each has a procedure or plan for completion.  Marketing plans can be less than a dozen pages or several hundred.  For your business, it is best to have a clear, concise plan that unambiguously details your goals.

A marketing plan is also useful if your company is introducing a new product or service or as a yearly way to reevaluate marketing strategies.  No matter what the purpose, there are several things that you should include in your marketing plan.

  • An introduction or a summary.   You should have about one page explaining your company’s background and a good paragraph describing your mission statement.  This is useful particularly for those who aren't familiar with your business, such as potential investors, who will look at your marketing plan.
  • Identify and explain your marketing objectives.
  • Identify your target customers.
  • A marketing plan will detail which customer needs your product/service meet; benefits your products offer; and how you will deliver these results.
  • Explain your pricing strategies.
  • Conduct industry analysis.   Who are your competitors?  How are they doing?  What is the market for your goods or services?  Is this likely to change in the near future?  This is a crucial part of any marketing plan.
  • Clear deadlines for completion of specific actions, as well as preliminary budget estimates.
  • Explain how you will evaluate your marketing plan, as well as individual components.

Writing a marketing plan may seem like a big task, especially if you’re not sure where to start.  The first step is to just gather the information you need.  Here are some resources you can use:
