Tips For An Office Cleaning Business

Running An Office Cleaning Business Can Allow You To Work For Yourself And Earn Serious Income.

Cleaning services are always in demand in both commercial and residential markets.  As the owner of an office cleaning business, your opportunities for growth will be expanded.   Cleaning requires hard work, long hours, attention to detail, and dedication to making your business successful. The upside is that you can start with little overhead and equipment costs.

Cleaning doesn't require a lot of technical know-how; but it does require hard work.

  • If you are working in a janitorial setting - like cleaning offices - you may need to know how to run larger pieces of equipment (like floor waxers) and use cleaning solutions for which you need training.
  • You must be meticulous.  People are paying you to clean their offices, which are crucial to their businesses, so you need to work carefully and make sure everything is clean and respectable.
  • You also have to be physically fit.

There are many benefits to owning your own office cleaning business, in addition to being your own boss.

  • There is relatively low starting cost for office cleaning/janitorial services.
  • Your business has the potential to expand.
  • You can work in offices, restaurants, private schools, and more.
  • Companies and businesses need cleaning services.  Most prefer to hire out to private cleaning services, so you're in a solid field

As with any business, there are some downsides you need to consider before you invest your time and money in an office cleaning business.

  • Offices generally need to be cleaned after hours.  This means that when most people are heading home from work, you're going in.
  • There will competition for jobs because cleaning services are popular home-based businesses
  • It is physically demanding work
  • Hours will be long, especially when you first begin your company

To begin, you probably don't need extensive equipment, but here are a few things that you'll want to have:

  • A vehicle.
  • Rubber gloves
  • Cleaning solutions, paper towels, brooms, mops, buckets
  • A cart which you can use to hold your equipment
  • A work uniform or proper clothing (a nametag is nice too)
  • A pager or cell phone. This is good if you have multiple clients who may need to get in touch with you.  If you have employees, it is also good that they be able to reach you with any questions

Most states will not require you to have a license but will have you register your business with the state.  The US Small Business Association website has a list of the sites to contact for each state.  Business insurance is a must, though. If you use a cleaning solution on a client's carpet and leave a big stain, the insurance will cover your liability.  This is good to have to protect your business from lawsuits.

There are numerous professional organizations to which you can belong or which you can use as resources, such as:

There are several training courses for cleaning businesses available for purchase online.  There are also companies that specialize in training employees of cleaning services.  These may be a good thing to look into if you want to do more commercial or industrial cleaning.

Startup costs are relatively low for cleaning services.  You can run the business from your home, which saves you from renting or buying office space.  The equipment and insurance to get started should cost between $500-$600.  You can always add more equipment as you grow, and even hire employees, but to start, you can get by with less.

There is potential for huge growth and income in this type of business.  You can work in a variety of settings, always as your own boss.  Starting an office cleaning business takes hard work and determination, but the rewards can be substantial.
