Make a living by painting houses and making them look great!

Background Information about the House painting business

Many people will often complain about all of the work that goes into painting their houses.  They can be new houses which they just bought and decide that they don't like, or these can be older houses that they just want to change a little.

Either way, the effort that goes into painting a house is often too much for a homeowner and they are happy to hire a professional to do the job for them.

Pros of the House painting business
This can be satisfying work as you watch the house transform into something completely different and better looking.

The work is easy and lets you spend a great deal of time outside during nice days, enjoying the weather.

You can also make good money painting houses because it is a large-scale effort of which people are happy to pay for your time.

Cons of Running a House painting business

Getting payments out of people can sometimes be a hassle.  Some houses will often require more work than others, making it a more difficult job to complete.

Many people can also change their minds halfway through a painting job and decide they want an entirely different color scheme.  This means that you have to start all over again.  Also, if the weather changes suddenly, you could lose an entire day's worth of work.

Licensing or Special Requirements for a House painting business:

You only need local permits required to start your own house painting business.  You can run your operation from home and need no office space.

Getting started in the House painting business:

If you decide that you want to learn how to start a house painting business, you will first need to pull together the basic types of materials which are needed, such as brushes, ladders, and drop cloths.  Then you need to find clients.

The best way to be able to do this is to be able to show them before and after pictures of houses that you have painted before to show them your skill.  If you have never painted any houses before, you should offer to do one for free, minus the costs of the paints, so that you can begin to build your portfolio.

As you begin to finish houses, word-of-mouth will spread and your portfolio will grow and you will begin to book clients.

Minimum Start up Cost:

Finding quality supplies along with enough backups to cover the job in case any of your tools break, you can start a house painting business for around $100.

This is if you make your client purchase all the paints which will be needed and do not charge them for the paint after the job is complete.  If you are the one buying the paint at the beginning of the job, your startup cost will vary depending on the size of the place you are painting.

Minimum Start up Equipment:

You will need many types of brushes, from wide brushes to get the most strokes available, roller brushes to help you cover large areas, and small brushes for detailed painting.

You will also need brushes for all of the different colors and types of paint you will use on any one given house.  Besides this, you will need drop cloths to cover anything you can't get paint on, ladders to reach high areas, and buckets to wash your brushes out in.

A vehicle to carry around your equipment is also important.

Optional or Advanced Equipment

You may want to have special tools, such as putty and a leveler to repair any parts in the wall which may be damaged.  A sander can also be important to smooth out the wall and remove any chipped paint which could previously be there.

Hours of Operation:

You will want to operate during the daylight hours so that you will always be able to see what you are doing.  This means that you should work from around 8AM through around 6PM.  This can of course change based on the clients you are working with.

This is also a job which will primarily take place during the spring, summer, and the beginning of autumn.  If your area has winter conditions, you will not be able to do much work with the cold weather and the snow.  Therefore, you will also want to be prepared to paint inside of homes and other buildings.

Minimum Number of People required to Operate A House painting business:

One person is all you really need, although two would make your job run much more efficiently.  Having helpers can also be beneficial because it allows you to cover more area in a quicker time, pleasing your customers more.

As your business takes off, you will want to have two or three people for every house you will be taking on at a time.
