Cleaning gutters can be an option for anyone looking to start a business.

Background Information about the Gutter cleaning business

Gutter cleaning businesses are relatively simple to begin.  People will often have dirty gutters but not want to take the trouble of climbing up onto their roofs to clean them out.

They are much more apt to hire someone to clean their gutters out for them.  If you can offer your services, plenty of people will want to take you up on your offer and use you to clean out their gutters.

Pros of the Gutter cleaning business

This is an easy business to work in for you need no set skills to be able to clean gutters.  It is easy work, if a little tedious and sometimes dirty.  People are also willing to pay decent money to have someone do the work that they do not want to do.

Cons of Running a Gutter cleaning business

The work can be dirty when cleaning decaying leaves and other debris out of the gutters.  It can also be dangerous as you will have to climb on the roofs of different homes and other buildings to clean out the gutters.

Licensing or Special Requirements for a Gutter cleaning business:

You only need whatever local licenses and forms needed to begin your business in the local area.  Everything else you can do on your own.

Getting Started in the Gutter cleaning business:

Once you have the proper equipment to run a gutter cleaning business, all that you will really need to do is get your name out there so people are willing to hire you to clean their gutters.

You may want to drive around, looking for houses with dirty gutters.  If you cold call at these houses, they may choose to eventually hire you to clean out their gutters.  You should also try to start word-of-mouth with satisfied customers and friends.

Minimum Start up Cost:

Depending on the equipment which you already own, you could begin a gutter cleaning business from anywhere from $100 through $250.  Some equipment you may also be able to borrow or rent, cutting your costs even further.

Minimum Start up Equipment:

You will need a hand-held power washer to be able to spray the gutters out until they are cleaned.  You will also need a ladder to be able to get up onto the roofs of the buildings you will be cleaning.

You will also need trash bags for the debris you clean out of the gutters as well as a pair of work gloves to avoid getting cut or harmed from anything which may be in the gutters.

Optional or Advanced Equipment

You may want additional tools to attach onto your pressure washer to make cleaning easier.  You may also want to spend money on advertising, although this is not necessary.

Hours of Operation:

You will need to work during daylight hours so that you can see what you are doing.  You will also not want to bother people at their homes at night, so you will want to work during the morning, afternoon, and early evening hours.

Minimum Number of People required to Operate A Gutter cleaning business:

You can run a gutter cleaning business successfully on your own.  If you start to grow and expand, you may choose to take on a partner, but this works well as a single person business.
