Starting A Credit Repair Business Provides A Useful Service To Many People With Poor Credit.

Is a credit repair business the right business for you?

A credit repair business helps people correct errors on their credit reports, which can be very costly when they try to apply for loans or other forms of credit.  This home-based business can be started very inexpensively and can provide nice income for you.

In order to run a successful credit repair business, you have to have knowledge of finances and credit reports.  It is vital you understand all aspects of this before you start trying to help people.  It is recommended that you have a college education, but training in accounting and/or finances is also sufficient.  Here are some other skills you'll need for this job:

  • Time and patience to do research.  You should be aware of all the information that is legally available to you and your clients.
  • Good communication skills.  You will act as a middleman between your clients and the credit bureaus.  You need to be able to speak to both sides with equal respect.
  • Knowledge of regulations and laws regarding credit reports and credit repair.  Your business needs to be in compliance with state and federal rules.

Benefits of owning a credit repair business include:

  • Being able to work at home.
  • Low start up costs.
  • Flexible schedule.
  • Being able to help people with their financial situations.

Some drawbacks may include:

  • No guarantee of steady work.
  • Wary customers - a lot of people are hesitant to hand over their financial data to anyone.
  • A huge amount of paperwork required for each client (organization is a must).
  • You can't guarantee success for your clients.
  • You are not allowed to charge until the work is completed.

The amount of equipment you'll need to start a credit repair business is a definite advantage.

  • A computer with internet access.
  • A phone.

The computer is vital to your success.  you'll also need the phone to communicate with clients and credit bureaus.  Some other equipment that you will find very useful:

  • A filing cabinet, folder, and other organizational tools.
  • Basic office supplies.
  • Software to keep track of clients' information, accounts, billing, payments, etc.

Whether or not you need a license to operate a credit repair business varies state to state.  Check with the Federal Trade Commission.  The FTC oversees credit repair services and is charged with consumer protection.  The guidelines for credit repair services are getting stricter due to past dishonest behavior by some.  Visit the FTC website (http://www.ftc.gov/index.shtml) or contact them for further information.

There are numerous courses and online resources that offer to teach you the ins and outs of credit repair.  Perhaps the best way, though, to learn about credit repair is to get a copy of your own credit report and analyze it.  Then learn the FTC's suggested steps for credit repair.  This will give you a great start.

Credit is a sensitive issue for many people and repairing errors can make a huge impact on future borrowing and financial decisions.  You can provide a valuable service for these people.  The most important things to remember are to be in full compliance with any state or federal laws and be honest and upfront with your clients.  There are a lot of people out there with credit problems, and this means a lot of potential clients for a good credit repair business.
