Everyone Needs Clothing, But Can You Succeed In This Tough Business?

Starting a business in an area which fills people's basic needs is important.  Everyone needs clothes, but that doesn't make owning a clothing business easy.  It's a good idea to find a specialty, like wedding clothes, sports clothes, professional or business attire, casual, plus size, children's, and more.  What do you need in order to succeed in owning a clothing business?

If you are working online, you'll eliminate the need for an actual store front, but you'll still need inventory.  In addition, you'll need:

• Great marketing - there is a lot of competition online.
• Shipping materials.
• Room for inventory, like a warehouse or at least a storage room.

In order to run a clothing business legally, you'll need to make sure you have the appropriate licenses.  Check with your state or with the Small Business Association for specific information.  Also, you'll need a sellers permit.  Insurance is important for protecting your inventory in case of a fire, theft, or accident.  Also, you'll want some type of insurance for your packages when being shipped.

The investment required to open and operate a clothing store is relatively high.  you'll need a storefront, inventory, insurance, licenses, as well as paying additional taxes.  If you have one or more employees, that further drives the cost up.  You will need private capital, private investors, and loans from banks or the SBA. 

Opening a clothing business is one of the most challenging business enterprises you can choose because of the high cost and the amount of established competitors.  Not only is it going to take hard work and determination, it's going to take money, great products, and good marketing.
