Starting a Bookstore: A Practical Guide to Literary Profits

The most important thing for any bookstore owner, bookstore manager, or would be bookstore owner to have in their possession is a passion for reading.

It doesn't matter what you read, be it classic literature, romance novels, pot boilers or hard boiled crime stories, a passion for books is what's going to make or break your bookstore.

Believe in the Power of Words

It may seem like anyone can run a bookstore, and to an extent, that's true, but understand that your average bookstore does not really make a whole lot of money.

It's not too hard to make the investment worth your while, but if you want your bookstore to be truly rewarding on a personal level, you need to believe in what you're doing, and that is running the best bookstore you can run.

Spreading the word (please pardon the pun) on reading should be your primary ambition. It's possible to make a living with a good bookstore, but it's not too likely that you're going to get rich overnight. So, again, the ideal bookstore owner is first and foremost, a reader.

Keep all your Readers Entertained

When stocking your bookstore, it's important to keep all kinds of literature in mind.

It's only natural that your bookstore will probably be able to build up a more impressive selection of authors who truly interest you, and there's nothing wrong with stocking up heavily on your favorite writers and recommending them to your customers, but understand that your bookstore will be catering to an entire community, not just your favorite writer's fan club.

Make sure to stock your bookstore with plenty of non-fiction such as instructional books, biographies, etcetera, as well as children's books, antique books, magazines and other periodicals.

Basically, anything you can get your hands on, there is someone out there just waiting for it to be stocked in some bookstore somewhere.

You'll also want to keep some stuff in the back room to make it a little easier to stock your bookstore.

This can include
  • a shelf ladder
  • step ladders
  • and, of course, dozens and dozens and dozens of boxes to keep the books that need to be sorted or won't fit on the shelves
The Right Spot for your Bookstore

A good location for a bookstore would be just about anywhere where people have time to browse.

Honestly, most bookstore purchases probably occur as a result of someone killing time while hanging out downtown. It may be worth looking to see if you can set your bookstore up near a popular coffee shop or other hangout.

There are plenty of ways to obtain stock for your bookstore, but when you're starting out, it might be a good idea to look for other bookstores that are going out of business.

You could just order books from a distributor's catalog, and you'll probably want to equip your bookstore with a new releases section, but a lot of the people visiting your bookstore are looking for old, out of stock paperbacks, and by buying up someone else's inventory, you can obtain a wide variety of books to get started with, and probably at a pretty nice discount.

You Need the Know How

Another requirement is a deep and expansive knowledge of books and authors. This should come naturally to anyone with enough sincere passion to start a bookstore, of course.

The benefit is that, by knowing what to recommend your customers, you can double, triple and quadruple your sales, by knowing what tastes tend to go together, which author influenced which other author, etcetera.

If you'd rather have nice, matching bookshelves for your bookstore, you can take a look at discount furniture stores, or even have some custom built. It shouldn't be hard to find a carpenter who'd be willing to cut you a deal for such a large order for your bookstore.

Developing your own Bookstore Strategies

The bookstore market has been in a bit of a slump lately, to be perfectly honest. Many bookstore owners have seen business sagging, and others have had to close shop for good.

However, there will always be a market for a good bookstore or two in every town and city.

Some of the most popular bookstores offer books at discount prices, allowing readers to buy dozens of books they've, as we always say “Been meaning to read”, all at once.

The most important thing is for your bookstore to try its best to meet every customer's needs (well, within reason) and to remember why you started your bookstore in the first place; To provide your fellow booklovers with plenty to read.
