Week Two
Learn More About What Your New Job Will Be Like, What You Can Expect, And Whether Or Not You're Suited For It.
Getting your hands wet
Whenever you're about to try something new, it's best to have some sort of idea what you're getting yourself into. This is especially the case when you're heading into a new career field or taking on responsibilities that you're unsure you can handle. Instead of heading into the unknown, it's a good idea to start thinking of ways that you might be able to sample' your chosen career field before you take the plunge.
Ideas for getting a sense of your new line of work
Of course, if you'd been able to try out your current job before you started, you might have decided to start your new business sooner. Since that's not the case, here are some ideas for getting a sense of your new self employment:
Volunteer - This is a great way for those interested in the medical field or handling clients in the medical field as well as those interested in the non-profit sector. If there's a way that you can donate some of your free time to a similar business to the one that you want to start, do it. What you learn here can help to shape the reality of what you're about to try.
Shadow someone in the field - Also known as mentoring, talk to someone else that's a professional in the field that you want to head into. Most likely, they will be more than willing to show you what you can expect and what mistakes they made that you can avoid.
Talk to others that are self-employed - When you're on your own, it can be a daunting enough process without feeling alone on a day to day basis. Instead, sign up for your local entrepreneur's group or find an online chat room or message board that can connect those that are striking out for themselves. Ask questions, search for guidance, and see what you can learn.
Learn all that you can about your field - From books to trade magazines, advertising materials, and the internet, it would be difficult to be unable to find something on your chosen professional. Try to read and absorb as much as you can about the business that you want to start.
If you're not sick of it by the time you're done reading, you've probably found a great fit. Looking for opportunities to learn and connect with others is the key to starting off successfully.
If you don't feel that this step is necessary or you feel uncomfortable at any point of the learning process, you may want to step back and ask yourself if this is really the profession for you. Maybe you've learned that what looked good from your current job really isn't the fit that you wanted it to be.
