How To Go From No Job To Your Own Business For Under $300 Getting Started
(Part 8)
The Customer Is Always Right; Understanding Your Buyers
That old adage rings true; The customer is always right'. While the dream of owning your own business often stems from wanting to be your own boss and make your own decisions, keep in mind that you do work for someone; your clients.
Once you've decided the business to perfectly fit your skills and talent, perhaps started a website and opened a profile on Elance , now you have to concentrate on your customer.
Choose a strategy
Always remember, Elance is a business, not a hobby. Like eBay, you can dabble or make a living. Bidding sporadically on a variety of things isn't a great business strategy for success. You need to think. Here are some strategies you might choose from: The first thing you should be aware of when bidding on Elance is that there is competition for the same assignment you are bidding on, obviously. You need to set yourself apart from the rest of the bidders.
Does that mean lowering your prices? Not necessarily, especially as lowering your pay too much will leave you below your goal income, forcing the need to accept more work to make up the loss. While that's a feasible solution, ask yourself first why you decided to start your work at home business. Small projects - bid on very small low paid jobs for a mere trickle of small payments and to build up lots of feedback fast. Big projects - try to catch the big fish - which may be harder if you have no feedback initially
Specialize - specialize in one type of project, e.g. report writing, web page editing, business websites design, image editing
Rapid response - specialize in rush jibs or overnight work - there is a good market for this as many people steer clear, and it can be a fast way to get selected if you can offer is without failing the buyer.
Quality - specialize high quality, high cost work - but this will take FAR longer to win you that vital first project.
Cost - specialize in low cost work - you'll need to work harder to earn a living but you are likely to attract more work at first.
