(Part 4)

Define Your business - Which Categories Should You Choose And Why
There are eleven basic categories to choose from in working with Elance : The more specific you are the better your chances of getting the project. Why focus on to many areas? Set your focus on one or two areas and do your absolute best in those areas. The old saying is true "Jack of all trades, master of none"

  • Administrative Support
  • Architecture & Engineering
  • Audio, Video & Multimedia
  • Graphic Design & Art
  • Legal
  • Management & Finance
  • Sales & Marketing
  • Software & Technology
  • Training & Development
  • Website Development
  • Writing & Translation.

However, there are numerous variations under each of these broad areas of expertise. When you first get started, it may be somewhat overwhelming to choose an area to begin in. However, with a little time and consideration, the answer will usually present itself. You should begin by evaluating your past experience. In what fields are you knowledgeable?

This not only means in an employment sense, but also hobbies and interests. When it comes to providing a service, what do you think you are good at? If necessary, make a list of your qualifications and skills to review as you make your decision. As you are setting up your Elance account, you will be asked to choose the category you want to list your services.

It is important to understand that each membership level includes only one category; therefore, to bid in multiple categories, you must pay an additional membership fee.

If you are qualified in multiple categories, this could also be profitable for you; just be aware of the fee structure when you are making these decisions. A contributing factor in the potential for success with each category you sign up for are the number of projects listed.

For example, the "Writing & Translation" category typically has pages and pages of projects, while the "Legal" category is very limited ones.

When you are evaluating which categories to sign up for, keep this in mind - if you can do both, "Writing" would be best to start with, and when you're earning project fees you can think about that "Legal" subscription.
