How To Choose The Right Web Host For Your Site
(Part 7)
What You Need To Know About Security When Choosing A Web Host - Physical And Virtual Security - As Well As What It Means To Your Business And Your Customers.
What about security? The information that you have on your website needs to stay on your website. You have compiled interesting articles, financial information and photos onto that virtual space, but what are you doing to protect them? When choosing a web host, you need to ask that same question of the provider - how safe are my files? Kinds of security There are two basic kinds of security that you need to be concerned about - physical and virtual.
Physical is the location of the server that is holding your information. As your web host these questions:
- Where is the server?
- What are the physical barriers? Locks? Cages? Reinforced containers?
- What are the security barriers? Password-enabled? Biometric scans? Access cards?
- What are the security measures that will protect the information in the case of a power outage? Are there generators?
- In the case of natural disaster, how secure and strong is the building?
If your server gets damaged, your information will be lost unless the web host has a backup plan for securing your website. Virtual security is the idea that your sensitive information will not be able to be accessed by anyone else that doesn't have privileges.
You need to have secure firewalls and encryption technology that is keeping hackers from getting into your site and stealing information from your business as well as your customers.
With all of the worry about identity theft and credit card fraud, your customers will be concerned about putting in their financial information onto your website, unless you can assure them it is a safe process.
Talk to the web host provider about what happens during a transaction and where the information goes, how it 's protected, and what happens when things go wrong.
