Should You Opt for Shared or Dedicated Web Hosting Services?

PART 2 - Go To Part 1

How To Choose The Right Web Host For Your Site (Part 2)

The Differences Between Dedicated And Shared Hosting, as Well as The Advantages And Disadvantages of Choosing One Over The Other.

The difference between dedicated and shared hosting

Just as with any service, there are different types of web hosting services that you can choose from - dedicated and shared hosting. While they both offer you the opportunity to create an impact on the internet, they also have certain features that you may want to keep in mind as you make your final decision.

Dedicated hosting

Dedicated hosting is when a website has a server completely to itself. The website is the only one using that particular server, so it generally affords the business more control over what occurs on the server level as well as provides more opportunities for growth and change.

Here are some of the benefits of dedicated hosting:

  • More space for website content
  • More control over web hosting services
  • No interference from other sites
  • Great for larger websites with higher traffic volumes
  • Dedicated servers allow your site to load faster because you are the only one on that server.

But the downfalls of dedicated hosting include:

  • Typically more expensive
  • May need to have some knowledge about how a server works
  • Does not mean that the server is owned by you
  • Shared hosting

Just as the name implies, shared hosting is when you share your server with another website or websites. This allows the price to be much lower than it is with a dedicated host, though there are some problems with this service that you will want to consider.

The benefits of shared hosting are:

  • More affordable option
  • Easier to manage

But the disadvantages to sharing with other websites are:

  • Less control over server function
  • When server is down, all sites are down
  • When one site has more traffic, your site can be harder for customers to access

The general rule of web hosting is that you should always consider whether or not your customer will be able to see' you. With a shared hosting service, this might not always be the case - especially when you or the other sharing websites have a lot of traffic coming in.

Summary

  • There are two main types of web hosting - dedicated and shared.
  • Dedicated hosting is when you have your own server for your site.
  • Dedicated hosting is more expensive, but offers more control over the use.
  • Shared hosting requires that you share space' with other websites.
  • Shared hosting can cause problems when one shared site is taking up more space than the others - limiting access to your site.
  • Ask yourself if your customer will be able to reach your website.
