Get Listed in Directories

Get Listed in Directories for Long Term Results:

Directory BookYou've built a great product or service. You've got a name, a phone number, etc. Now, you have to put yourself out there. If you're a small business owner, chances are that your customers will find you through word-of-mouth referrals and directory listings.

Most people assume that being listed in a directory means the Yellow Pages or local phone book, but there are so many other "directories" that exist! Luckily for small business owners, most of them are free.

Print Directories:

  1. Local Phone Book - You'll probably get a free listing as long as you have phone service with a major provider in your area. Upgrades or ads will cost extra.
  2. Industry or Niche Guides - Just about every industry has organizations and directory publishers that fit your niche.
  3. Retailer/Wholesale Magazines - If you sell products, getting listed in the "where to buy" section of a retail or wholesale directory may be worthwhile.
  4. Chamber of Commerce - Though it's usually not free, if a lot of your business is local or business-to-business, you'll want to be listed in your city's directory.

Online Directories:

  1. Yellowpages.com
  2. Yahoo
  3. Google
  4. MSN
  5. SuperPages
  6. CitySearch
  7. Niche/Industry Directories - There are literally hundreds of websites that publish an online directory or list of businesses specifically like yours, that cater to your target audience. Find them!

Remember to keep a list of directories that you have provided information to, in case your information changes. A handy file with your usernames and passwords will help in case you move or change a phone number.

Also, take advantage of the other business information that directories allow you to publish, such as hours, special promotions, a link to your website, and a basic description.

Choosing the right "category" in which to be listed is also important so that your customers can find you. Some directory companies will also make a new category just for you if you ask!

Some Other Considerations for Being Listed in Directories:

Directory Folders

  1. If you run a business from your home, you may want to withhold address/location information or rent a PO Box.
  2. If your business line is a Vonage, Lingo, or other VoIP/Internet phone line, you may not be able to be listed in print directories such as YellowBook or SuperPages.
  3. If you move/change contact information, make sure to update all directory information. Most online directories don't update your information for you automatically!
  4. If people must make an appointment, perhaps it's more appropriate to list a phone number, e-mail, or website than a physical address.
  5. Being listed in directories will also invite many solicitors and salespeople to contact you. Be ready to politely turn down their offers or find ways to keep them from taking too much of your time.
  6. Whenever possible, track the number of clicks to your website or calls from a directory listing, to see its effectiveness.

Once you open for business, it's important to spend your time wisely. Let the directory companies take a load off your shoulders by doing what they do best: letting others discover who and where you are.
