When In Doubt of A Business Decision, Write A Letter To Yourself

Have you ever written a letter asking for help on a certain topic, only to discover that the process caused you to come up with your own solutions?

It happened to me! I was selling a CD-ROM online and couldn't get any sales.

I started to write a letter to a professional marketer, describing what I did.

In my letter I wrote that I had tested the product. People who used the demo liked it.

The CD was priced reasonably. So why couldn't I get any sales?

I included my website address with the letter and asked him if he would take a look. After writing the letter, I reread it as if I were the recipient. I formulated a reply.

• Your site is not listed with the major search engines.
• You are not targeting the right audience.
• You don't offer any bonuses. You have to add value to the CD!
  

• I found your offer to be dull. There is nothing that causes me to want to buy the CD.
• Your offer is about you, not about the client. What's in it for him?
• Your offer does not persuade the client to take action
• Your offer has no sense of urgency
• Your offer is about features, not benefits."

Replying to my own letter helped me see a lot of errors that I had never noticed before. You can always seek the help of others, but the purpose of this exercise is to get your mind working. Asking the right questions is a valuable tool, available at any time.

You have the ability to solve many of your own problems. You just have to learn to ask the right questions. You will be surprised at the results!
