Chapter 2 - Finding the Business and Products That Suit You AND Your Customer
Business Trends - To Help you Find Setup A Niche Business

Business Tredns and Finding A Niche in Your Business

Look At Business Trends To Identify Business a niche in your business

Businesses built around specific themes with a specific group of customers. As wise businessmen and women know, if you’re trying to sell to everyone, you will sell to no one.

Where Is Your Niche?

To find a niche, you have to do your research and do a bit of brainstorming. You will want to look at two things.  The total number of buying units and the ability to pay.

Buying units are the number of people are out there that can buy your products and services.

For instance, if you are going to market materials to orthodontists, the number of practicing orthodontists equals your buying units.

Don’t pursue a niche unless it has at least 50,000 buying units.

The ability to pay is also crucial. Do your buying units have the means, and do they have the desire to buy the products and services that you’re going to offer them?

Follow the Business Trends

You will want a product that is in high demand. You can see the principle of supply and demand every Christmas.

Think way back to the days of the Cabbage Patch doll. High demand and low supply created high prices and huge lines.

To find an item in such high demand, you will need to research the trends.

If you know what the trends are, you are better able to determine what will be a hot selling item.

There are many ways to spot trends. Simply watching the news nightly can help you get an idea. Other ways are looking at trend reports.

One trend report by Datamonitor talks about 10 trends. These include the following:

  1. Children are acting older and adults are acting more like kids.
  2. Metrosexuality - men and women are behaving in more similar ways.
  3. More people live alone, do not get married, or do not have children.
  1. High-income groups are discount shopping and lower income groups are splurging on luxury items.
  2. Individualism is growing.
  3. Consumers are spending more time at home.
  4. Technology is keeping us all connected.
  5. People are seeking out more intense experiences.
  6. People are buying products that offer convenience.
  7. Health and well-being are important.

These are just a few of the trends in our current society.

Let’s look at a few of the trends listed above to get an idea what this means to you and picking your product.

  • More Time at Home – If consumers are spending more time at home, they will want things to do while at home – think about home entertainment products.
  • Intense Experiences - Extreme sports, long action-packed weekends, aromatherapy, authentic ethnic foods, even intense flavors of soft drinks are all possibilities for someone seeking intensity.
  • Health and Well-Being – One big health concern at this time is weight loss. What do people who are getting heavier want? To be less heavy. Products such as exercise equipment, diet pills, and diet plans.

Learning about these trends can help you determine what you might want to sell or provide. Finding a niche market that suits your skills while meeting a demand will make your business much more likely to succeed.
