Alexander Ponyatov immigrated from his homeland of Russia to the United States in 1927.

Alexander Ponyatov was born in Russia and from an early age, showed a deep liking for engineering. His father was sharp enough to recognize his son's abilities and sent him to Germany to hone his talents at a technical academy.
The young man soon had plans
to build a turbine factory in his homeland but World War I prevented him from doing so. By the time he returned home, civil war had erupted and further derailed his plans to go into business. He ended up in China working for the Shanghai Power Corporation.
By the time he reached the US in 1927, he had much experience in the world of electrical engineering and began working for numerous company's throughout Word War II. He created motors and generators for military use and took advantage of his technological work for wartime purposes, honing his skills until the time was right to form his own company.
The time came in 1944 when Ponyatov set up Ampex , an electronics company based in Redwood City, California. He began working on recording equipment and made several breakthroughs that would revolutionize the radio recording industry. In 1948 he produced the first American-made magnetic audio tape recorder and with the financial backing of recording artist Bing Crosby, brought Ampex to the forefront of the electronics industry.
Ampex went on to create many more technological breakthroughs and in the 1950s, began work on what would be one of the greatest innovations in the world of technology - the video tape recorder. This truly made Ampex a world renown tech company and the leader in its industry.
Ponyatov moved the company ever forward with his famed philosophy for product excellence and established Ampex as one of the greatest and most innovative tech companies in the world.
