Chances are, you've walked into a Sears department store at some point in your life. Together with Richard Sears, Julius Rosenwald set up the corporation known as Sears Roebuck and Company.
It was Richard Sears who was responsible for the actual merchandise being sold in the stores, but Julius Rosenwald was the man behind the management philosophy that the company eventually adopted.
Julius Rosenwald - How Sears Became a Retail Giant
Originally, it was Sears and Roebuck that were managing the retail business, but Roebuck was unable to sell off all their goods and suffered from poor health. It was during this time that the brother of Julius Rosenwald asked for the former's assistance.
It was only when Julius Rosenwald stepped in that they were able to get adequate financing for a failing enterprise. What was amazing was how Sears and Rosenwald hit it off immediately. They were able to form a clear and solid vision for their business that would pave the way for its industry leadership.
At its peak, Sears was actually the largest retail store in the United States when it enjoyed unprecedented success during the 1900s. It was this business leader who thought of diversifying the product line, allowing consumers to buy everything that they needed under one roof whether it was hardware, furniture or even the odds and ends that you need at home. He was also able to foresee the growth of suburban areas so he encouraged his other partners in the business to expand Sears beyond the limits of Illinois.
Although the recession that came about during World War I destroyed business for Sears, it was Julius Rosenwald who pledged his personal funds to bring the company back on track. Julius Rosenwald was actually far more interested in devoting his time and effort to philanthropy towards the end of his life.
More than the million-dollar retail business that he set up, he is also remembered for the foundation he set up for the education of
African Americans. He also worked closely with the Department of Agriculture in the U.S. where he provided assistance to people living in rural America.
