Frank Doubleday - Strive to Make Your Dreams Come True
Frank Doubleday was born in New York Brooklyn and his father was a hatter. Ever since he was a kid, Doubleday had been interested with the business of printing. At the young age of ten, he was able to save up enough money to be able to purchase a printing press of his own.
He used the money to invest in printing news circulars and advertising paraphernalia for local businesses. At the age of 14, he was forced to look for a full time job since the business of his father failed.
He worked at the firm of Charles Scribner's Sons for 18 years. Frank Doubleday became the publisher of the Scribner's Magazine. He also had Scribner's subscription book department under his wing.
The relationship between Frank Doubleday and J. Blair Scribner did not flourish so Doubleday left the company. He went to Samuel McClure, publisher of McClure's Magazine, and formed a partnership. Together they created the Doubleday & McClure Company. They went on and published works of different popular authors.
The Doubleday & McClure Company was dissolved on December 31, 1899 because there was a growing friction between McClure and Doubleday. Frank Doubleday sought out another partner and found Walter Hines Page, the Atlantic Monthly's former editor.
A new firm was established and it was named Doubleday, Page & Co. Unfortunately, Frank Doubleday's new partner Walter Hines Page died in a bedroom accident. This time he bought George H. Doran's publishing house and now the name of the company became Doubleday, Doran and Co.
Doubleday has become one of the largest book publishing companies and his son continued his work. But in 1986, it was sold to Bertelsmann. In 1988 the company became Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group and in 1998, it became one of Random House's division.
