How Edward Scripps Became a Business Leader in Newspapers and Other Media Outlets

Edward Scripps is considered to be the man behind the first newspaper chain in the America - the United Press International.

Scripps was raised in a farm at Winchester, Ohio. His colossal contributions to the journalism industry couldn't be farther than one might usually expect from a boy who grew up in a family's farm.

However, his family's reputable publishing experience and his unyielding belief in bringing the newspaper to everyone's home, he rose above everyone's expectations and became a prominent business leader in the journalism industry.

Edward Scripps - How Scripps Made Newspaper's a Part of Daily Life

At a time when the newspaper business was strictly dominated by the Associated Press, Edward Scripps had a vision of making the newspaper a regular part of everyday American life. Scripps began working at the tender age of 18 under his half brother James Scripps who owned and managed the Detroit Advertiser and Tribune.

When he was experienced enough, James put him in an editorial position. In 1878, he acquired enough knowledge to put up a newspaper of his own, the Cleveland Penny Press , a newspaper that is reasonably priced but with the same quality and information that a more expensive newspaper brings . He borrowed money from his relatives to make Cleveland Penny Press a reality.

With additional experience from managing the Cleveland Penny Press, Scripps defied the Associated Press tradition of monopolizing agreements with a newspaper each in a specific market to dampen the spirits of potential newspaper competitors by founding the UPI or United Press International . Its vision was to make newspaper's accessible to each and every American.

With the triumph of United Press International, Edward Scripps began thinking of new ways to reach people; Scripps founded United Media the E.W. Scripps Company and Scripps Howard News Service. Now, even after his death, his legacy lives on through these syndications that still holds the same principle that Edward Scripps lived by; that everyone's right to accessible information be given to all.
