As a small business owner, you need to be able to rely on a small but reliable staff. Sometimes, you will encounter great employees; other times, you may encounter employees who under-perform. Either way, this is where employee feedback plays an important role.

Employee Feedback - Wanting the Best from Your Employees

First: Give credit when credit is due. If you have employees that are truly reliable and perform well, give them a pat on the back! You will be surprised at how much it means to them that you recognize their hard work!

Second: Giving feedback to employees is not just about telling them what they are doing wrong. While giving feedback, explain why you feel he or she is under-delivering AND give tips or even training on how they can improve themselves and how they perform their tasks. This way, you make your staff feel that you are investing in them.

Furthermore, hearing about their under-performance directly from you is better than hearing it from other employees. And YOU will be able to explain things better (coming from the perspective of the business owner). As such, the employee will not feel any resentment.

Of course, employee feedback is not just 'small talk'. Make it clear too that you expect this particular employee to improve after you have provided feedback and monitor his or her progress.

Third: Employee feedback sessions are excellent ways to make your staff feel that they are truly part of your home-based business. By giving time to help them improve accomplishing their tasks, you make them feel an important part of your business. And this in turn, will make them care for your business more.

Employee feedback is a very important aspect of running a business because it is a way for you to enable your staff to work better for your it (and consequently, for you). As such, make it a point to provide feedback to your employees on a regular basis (e.g., every quarter) and not only when it strikes you.

Action Steps to Routinely Give Employee Feedback

  • Make a list of all your employees and their titles or positions and then evaluate them according to their job descriptions.
  • Make sure you make notes. When you call employees to give your feedback, it is better if this is supported with facts.
  • Set a specific time or schedule for employee feedback sessions. These things should not be rushed.

Important Points to Routinely Give Employee Feedback

  • Employee feedback is not just a time to call on those who under-deliver. Employees who do well should also be provided with the proper feedback.
  • Inform underperforming employees that you expect them to improve after the feedback session.
  • Listen and make notes of any concerns employees may voice out about the company.
