If you want to be a better boss, the first thing you have to realize is that you must have leadership skills aside from just managerial proficiency. Businesses everywhere abound with managers within their organizations. However, not all businesses can claim the existence of true leaders in their company. The first step to being a better boss is to make a logical distinction between a manager and a leader.

A manager's job is an important role in any business but as a leader you should realize that your role is different than that of a manager's. A leader is one who sees the big picture and goes further than day-to-day tasks to try and motivate his or her group to excel in what he or she does.

It is not to strive just 'for the good of the company', but rather to instill in others the values of a 'job well done'! So if you want to be a better boss, your mind-set should be that of leading people to function in a productive and dynamic work setting.

A leader must be an example to others in the company in order to be a better boss . A true leader exemplifies high standards at work as an employee and as an individual.

Another way to be a better boss is to ensure that you are a walking ball of enthusiasm and inspire others to be enthusiastic about their jobs as well. Now, this does not mean that you should be the last one to leave the office all the time! It means that when you do leave the office, you have accomplished a lot that day.

To be a better boss, a manager must also adopt the ability of a leader to exercise fair judgment and objectivity. A manager will earn the respect of employees if everybody is treated equally regardless of position.

Communication is vital to being a better boss. Remember that a leader communicates and coordinates regularly with people at various levels of the company to ensure that everything is on track. As such, a true leader should be able to comfortably communicate with subordinates (without appearing 'high and mighty' to them) and with higher executives (without appearing like a child desperate for a parent's attention).

Another step to being a better boss is to eliminate the image of authority as a manager and project the image of a leader who is ready to lend a hand to anyone at anytime.

Employees appreciate a manager who is accessible to them as a person who is sincere in actions and words. So if you want to be a good leader, inspire others to always do their best whatever task is assigned. Do this and being labeled as a 'great boss' will automatically follow.
