Becoming A Travel Agent isn't that Hard - Just Follow These Tips to Build your Successful Travel and Tours Business

So you want to become a tour travel agent . It is really not surprising that many people want to become a tour travel agent as it represents many benefits and opportunities to individuals.

If you are somebody who loves to travel and you appreciate different customs and cultures, what can be a better business than getting into the travels and tours industry?

What Makes for a Great Tour Travel Agent ?

Every year, millions of people travel across the globe. Some travel for business but most of the time people go for pleasure. If you want to be a tour travel agent , you need to possess the following skills.

You should have traveled quite extensively yourself.  Don't forget that you are establishing a travels and tours BUSINESS and it is important that you come across to customers as a travel agent who has 'been there and done that'. Now, you need not have traveled the whole globe but some traveling experience will undoubtedly help you build a better rapport with clients especially if your tour travel business is OFFline and you need to meet customers face-to-face everyday.

You should be people-friendly.  As a tour travel agent, you will meet different people from all walks of life so unless you plan to specialize your tour travel business (e.g., golf tours), then you should always be friendly and accommodating to most people as you never know when one will be a client and or useful contact. The travel and tourism industry is, after all, a 'close-knit community of opportunity'. So if location, location, location is the mantra of real estate agents, yours would have to be contacts, contacts, contacts!

You should have a genuine interest and extensive knowledge of different locations.  You never know what your clients will ask of you but nearly all will expect to be able to rely on their travel agent for advice on where to go, which airline to use, which hotel is least expensive, etc.

You should be a GREAT ORGANIZER.  The Internet has made it possible to make vast amounts of travel and transportation information online. The downside is that ALL this information has made planning for even the simplest travels chaotic. This is why people - from honeymooners to convention attendees - seek tour travel agents to help them with ALL their traveling needs. It is thus in YOUR responsibility to see to it that your client's travels are hassle-free and to do this you must be a great organizer.

You should be very FLEXIBLE.  You planned a trip for a couple for a month... and now they are not going. And now the phone is ringing and another couple wants a cruise trip for THIS coming weekend. This is just a day in the life of a tour travel agent and you should be extremely flexible for the varying needs of your clients.

The costs of setting up a tour travel agency depends a lot on how big or small you want your tour travel agent business to be. The good thing about this business is that you can just establish it all by yourself as a home-based business or have several travel agents working under you. Either way, you should be prepared to spend at least on the following:

  • travels and tours home business fees
  • membership fees in several travels and tours -related associations such as those for hotels, rental cars, airline carriers, etc.
