One of the fastest and easiest services you can provide from home is to offer online data entry services.
Thanks to the Internet, we are moving more and more towards a 'mobile workplace' where clients do not mind where you are located in the world so long as you can do the job that they hand out (on time and on budget of course).
Providing online data entry services can be a very lucrative business. Assignments can be billed per project or per hour depending on the volume of the project and or the level of data entry required. Still, do not forget that this service needs to be accomplished in the most professional manner. Otherwise, you will not be able to build a good reputation and in the online community, this is going to be responsible for most of the work you can receive.
What You Need to Start Offering Online Data Entry Services
The skill set required for data entry services may not be 'high level' but it does not mean that just anybody with a PC can start offering it either. Following is a simple guide to get you started.
Make sure you have a decently-configured PC with a reasonably fast and reliable Internet connection. Your PC does not need to be top-of-the-line but it shouldn't be from the 1990's either! Most data entry projects have a very fast turnaround time so you need to be able to rely on your computer. Telling a client that your PC crashed or had to be fixed, and therefore will delay you in finishing the project, is just as sure as telling the client not to give you future projects.
A fast and reliable Internet connection is also important. Most clients, because they don't see you, would like to be re-assured that you are not a bogus provider and so would like to know that you are reachable during normal business hours. Further, online data entry projects may require the client to send you big files of data so you need to be able to download them and upload your output in good time.
Ensure you have updated versions of leading word processing software. Again, you don't need to have THE latest versions but your applications should not be that old either. Mostly, you will need the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). The version out now is 2003 and Microsoft plans to release version 2006 soon. As such, if you're using MS Office 98, you should start updating before you go online and start offering online data entry services.
Ensure you are equipped with basic office equipment and supplies. Apart from a decent PC, you need to have a decent home office as well especially if you plan to take on data entry projects as a full-time. You would most likely need a printer, fax and scanner. Luckily, there are many inexpensive all-in-one office equipment now so you need not go spend a ton. You can also just buy second hand equipment. Basic office supplies such as paper, pens, folders and record books are also required.
Lastly, you may be asking WHERE you can start offering your data entry services . Well you don't need to look far at all as there are online e-marketplaces where you can sign up for such as Elance.com, Guru.com, Freelance.com Freelanceworkexchange.com, and more!
