How To Start A Direct Selling Business

How To Start A Direct Selling Business - Background Information

In the online world, affiliate marketing is perhaps the quickest way to earn money. In the OFFline world, however, a direct selling business is its counterpart.

Direct selling is when a consumer product or service is provided directly  to the consumer either by the manufacturer of the product or the provider of service himself, or through one of his distributors.

The main difference is that there is NO retail store or fixed location where consumers buy the product or service. It is up to the distributor (you) to find your clients. And how do you earn from direct selling? Just like in affiliate marketing online, you earn based on commissions.

The Direct Selling Business - Is it for You?

Most people who get into direct selling are stay-at-home moms but anybody can get into direct selling. Also, many people start off in direct selling as a hobby or part-time job but do not be deceived... there are plenty of people who find direct selling a lucrative business. So is direct sales for you? If in doubt, ask yourself the following questions.

  • Do you like meeting other people? A career in direct sales calls for you to interact with a lot of people everyday so if you are an introvert who doesn't like being neighborly then direct selling will not be a lucrative endeavor for you because selling directly is all about reaching out to other people and making buyers out of them.
  • Are you spontaneous?  You may be offering consumers a product or service that you know by heart but when it comes to clients, they can be found anytime, anywhere. And when somebody shows any inclination towards your offerings, then you should be flexible enough to adjust to their schedules.
  • Do you have a high self-esteem?  You really cannot sell a product or service if you do not present yourself as an 'authority'. After all, YOU would not want to buy something from somebody who does not look like HE will buy it himself right?
  • Are you easily discouraged?  Direct selling is all about highs and lows and you WILL receive a lot of turn downs, closed doors and phone hang ups. As such, you should learn to take things in stride. Don't forget... IT'S NOT PERSONAL.
  • Do you have that WINNING attitude?  You need to really be able to influence people in direct selling . A not-so-good product can still be sold by a great seller but a not-so-good seller will find it hard to sell even the best of products.

Like in many things in business, direct selling can be fun and extremely lucrative IF you put your heart in it and really work hard. Try it out!
