If you're a teacher or someone who loves to teach, starting a tutoring services business can be ideal. The thing with tutorial services however is not so much about starting but in staying in the business and maintaining your clients.
Tutoring Services - Starting and Keeping the Business
Spread the word. Provided that you're pre-qualified to teach or already a teacher to begin with, you can immediately offer tutoring services to friends, co-teachers, and/or colleagues who can provide you with referrals.
Try giving out flyers (containing all pertinent information, of course) that can be torn off by any interested parties.
Post these flyers in strategic locations like libraries, supermarkets, and even schools if you get permission for it. Keep in mind that what you're after is not just the students but the parents attention as well and the key to any successful business is getting your name out there.
Determine your rates. Do you plan to charge per hour or per session? Many tutors offer both depending on what their clients prefer. Scout around about the average rate of tutors and don't charge too high or too low. Charging too high can cost you some clients. Conversely, some may wonder about the quality of your tutoring service if you charge too low.
Go to schools. Get in touch with local school districts. Find out the textbooks they're using and if they're giving away or selling old books. While you're at it, you can try asking the school for any referrals to parents who might be interested in tutorial services for their kids. You can also try borrowing old textbooks from friends and colleagues for your tutoring materials.
Specialize. Don't try to teach all subjects at the same time. For starters, you might want to teach the subjects you're most comfortable in or the ones that are more in demand like Math or Reading. Specializing in one or two subjects will help you focus on what you're teaching and become a better teacher in the given subject. Aside from advertising, tutoring services require very little capital investment.
It can be a great business for retired teachers or those wanting to earn extra income during weekends. You also get the fulfillment of helping a child cope with the challenges of education.
