Tips on Becoming A Personal Shopper
Being a personal shopper is every shopaholic's dream profession. Imagine yourself shopping to your heart's content.
And it's not even your money you are spending. If you love to shop, and you have an eye for quality and beauty, topped with endless patience to scour shops for a specific item, you can be a personal shopper.
A personal shopper shops for all kinds of people, for all kinds of reasons. Usually, clients are those on the upscale end - people who are too busy to find time to shop.
Clients may either ask a personal shopper to look for personal and home items or gifts. Price is usually not a consideration. But a personal shopper is expected to buy items that are worth every dollar spent.
Personal Shopper - What You Need to Know About Personal Shopping
First up, you don't need to have formal schooling on fashion to become a personal shopper. Retail experience in clothing is a plus but not a necessity. What you need though, is a genuine love, passion and patience for shopping.
A no nonsense knowledge in all things fashion is required. Make it a point to be updated about the latest trends by scouring the net, magazines and watching fashion shows on TV.
Constantly visit malls and outlet stores. You must also have an eye for quality and beauty and familiarity with shops in the area. Last but not least, you have to have good people skills in dealing both with your clients and the shops that you frequent.
If you deal well with your clients, they will keep using your services. If you deal well with your suppliers, they can be instrumental in producing hard-to-find items and they can update you on latest arrivals.
Marketing Yourself as a Personal Shopper
If you think you have these qualities, you have a good chance to succeed as a personal shopper. On the marketing side, advertise your services through the yellow pages, magazines or newspapers. You can also give out flyers, business cards and brochures.
You can also create a website with descriptions of your services. When handling clients for the first time, it is best to prepare a questionnaire so as not to bombard them with questions that are everywhere. Design a structured, organized questionnaire. Start with the client's profile (name, address, contact info, budget, etc.).
Then proceed to ask about their lifestyle, job, clothing and accessory preferences, faves and fetishes and of course, body measurements. From there you can begin to build a profile that is entirely based on what the customer needs and expects to get from your services.
Lastly, keep track of all your purchases and customer's feedback on each item for future reference. Inform clients about limited offerings, which they might want to acquire. If an item they requested is not available, give suggestions and other options. In time, they will become too comfortable with you to do without your services.
