Tips on creating a thriving and flourishing party planning career

Parties are fun and exciting. But organizing parties is an exhausting and overwhelming experience for many people. That is why many people hire party planners to do the job for them.

If you have the gift and talent of organizing and planning parties, you might consider starting your own home based party planning business.

How to Get into the Party Planning Business

As a party planner, you are often tasked to handle almost every aspect of the party preparation to ensure its success -- from decorations and themes, to the transportation of guests.

In the party planning business, it is imperative to have a list of reliable contacts at your disposal. You need contacts for catering, flowers, balloons, tables & chairs, entertainers, invitations, giveaways and even transportation.

Aside from your contacts, you will also need a computer with Internet access, a reliable phone line, a cell phone, and a printer. These will be the tools of your trade. You need your computer to send emails and print out quotations and billing statements. Your phone is your life line between you and your contacts, as well as your clients.

Skills Needed:
One of the most important skills that you will require when starting a home based party planning business is management skills.

You will be orchestrating every detail that pertains to the party. As the maestro, it is your responsibility to ensure that everything, up to the smallest detail, is in its right place. It is also your responsibility to manage your time and budget to fit to with the type of party your clients want.

Another important skill is communication skills. Know how to listen intently to what your clients want. Hosting a large party can be stressful, and as the party planner it is part of your job to keep the hostess calm and happy while preparations are being made.

Creative skills are also a must. In the party planning business, creativity is an important aspect in the whole success of the party. Use your creative skills to give the party its life and soul.

Last, but not the least, you must have great stress management skills. The party planning business is a very exhausting job. Learn how to manage your stress properly to avoid mental and physical exhaustion.

Experience Needed:
It would be good to have had experience with planning large parties or even business functions before starting your home based party planning business. A great way to gain experience is to throw yourself a party. Invite friends and family to come. Let them comment and give you feedback.

Startup Requirements:
You need to have a good set of contacts and a few, but well-prepared party themes you can use when advising clients on how to set up a smashing party.
