How to Operate a Home-Based Laundry Business

Clothing is one of the most essential elements of daily living - and clothes need washing.

But the problem nowadays is that people are so busy that they do not have time to do their own laundry anymore.

This gives you an opportunity to turn people's “busy-ness” into a profitable business of your own, by putting up a laundry business.

How to Get Into the Laundry Business

Equipment. The basic equipment for a laundry business is a washing extractor. A washing extractor is a machine that is capable of washing and drying clothes. Buying a brand new machine can be quite heavy on the pocket but you can find second hand machines that sell for a fraction of the price of the brand new one.

While there are home washing machines that do the same job, it is not advised to use them for a laundry business. They are not durable enough nor do they have the capacity to perform tasks for a full-service laundry shop.

Space:
Equipment, unwashed clothes and washed clothes will take up space. The location of your laundry business should have adequate space to house all the necessary materials and collaterals.

Detergent:
Instead of using branded detergents, use generic and commercial ones. This strategy will help in saving financial resources. Another option is to make your own detergent. There are books and guides that can give information on how to do this.

Skills Needed:
Marketing Skills. It can't be stressed enough that the key to having a good start in business is marketing skills. A new and unknown laundry business needs to have good exposure to attract potential customers.

Technical Skills. There will be times that your equipment will malfunction. This is inevitable. Familiarity with the equipment and a little of troubleshooting know-how will help avoid delays.

Experience Needed:
One of the advantages in starting a laundry business is that experience with other businesses is not really necessary. Though it can help during the early phase of operation, experience is not that essential.

Start Up Requirements:
Operating a business has legal aspects that one must comply with even if it is just a home business. Contact a business group or association in your locality and ask for information regarding the different legal requirements in putting up a laundry business.

Once the business is operational, you can start advertising your services on a local newspaper or the radio, if the budget permits. Another cheap but effective way of advertising is through referrals. Ask your first customers to put in a good word about your business to other people.
