What you need to know about starting a home painting business

People spend millions of dollars every year on home improvement alone. One aspect of this is home painting. If you have plans of starting your own home business, you might want to consider a home painting business.

A home painting business can generate good income. Not just that, it can also give you fringe benefits such as you get to choose your hours of work, go to different locations, and have the chance to meet interesting people.

With a few tools and skills in painting, you can already start your own home painting business.

How to Get Into The Home Painting Business

Before you can start your own home painting business, you must have all the necessary tools and equipment. The main equipment set you will need includes ladders, drop cloths, brushes, and a means of transportation (a van or anything big enough to carry all your tools). Some other stuff you will need include spirit of oleum, for thinning and cleaning, scrapers, hammers, nails, newspapers, etc.

Another important thing to have, but not really necessary, is a paint store that you can somewhat call a “business partner.” This means a paint store that will give you discounts on wholesale purchases and bulk orders. This is one way of boosting your profit.

Skills Needed:
In the home painting business it is important to know at least the basics of painting. This includes knowing the different types of paint, how to differentiate colors, color mixing, the different types of brushes and when to use them, and other basic painting know-how. You should also know how to use all of your equipment properly and efficiently.

In this line of work, you will need to be very resourceful. There will be times, while doing a job, that you will lack tools, materials and other resources. But if you are resourceful, you can find quick solutions to avoid delays.

Experience Needed:
Being familiar with the painting tools and how to use them will make this job easier. Having had experience doing professional home painting is a major plus, but is not really necessary.

Start Up Requirements:
Plan everything first before you go operational. Establish who will be your target market, set the scope of your paint jobs and the price for your services. You could also advertise your business. You can start off by giving your business details to your local paint stores. You can also put some ads in the newspaper.
