A home decorator is often called an interior designer. Oftentimes, a home decorator is a graduate of interior design courses.

However, it is not surprising to find successful home decorators who started out with no formal training; their genuine talent for color concepts, furniture matching and the like serving as their main investment in the business.

What is Home Decorating All About?

A home decorator is responsible for embellishing homes. You pick out color schemes, furniture, tapestries and mix and match various fabrics to create a client's dream space.

Apart from the glamorous side, home decorators should also be skilful at other things such as sourcing materials, coordinating people (oftentimes, you are dealing with painters, architects, etc.), and making sure the project is within the client's budget.

To accomplish the latter, you need tremendous haggling and negotiation skills with providers and be highly organized with receipts and invoices.

As mentioned, formal education in interior design is not required to get started but it does help in securing bigger clients. So do consider enrolling in a university or a school that is FIDER accredited.

FIDER is an organization that ensures that a particular program is at par with the highest principles of design. After graduating, look for really good internship programs as this will help greatly in cementing your reputation as a top-notch home decorator.

You can also enroll in courses that teach the use of AutoCAD and AutoDesk. These applications will help you draft designs, improve on them and finally, show them to your clients (for approval or tweaking).

As for marketing your services, create a web site or set up a blog about you and put up a portfolio of work you have already done (yes, even that one you did for your own room). Lastly, keep learning! Keep yourself updated with the latest trends in home decorating as various design styles keep on cropping up.
