Tips for starting your own couier business

A courier business picks up and delivers merchandise and occasionally people and pet animals to and from different places like hospitals, homes, airports and businesses.

Courier service companies are in high demand these days since there is always somebody out there needing packages delivered to whatever location at the shortest possible time.

How to Get into the Courier Business

The post office has fixed schedules and will only pick up packages during specific times. Courier companies often pick up and deliver anytime, night or day, as needed. When starting a courier business, there are certain conditions that need to be met in order to ensure a successful outcome.

Skills Needed:
Technical skills are needed in this type of business to enable operation of different office equipment. Financial skills will prove useful in calculating how much it will actually take to start and run the courier business. A bit of marketing and sales skills are essential in promoting the business and attracting more customers.

The ability to multi-task while keeping things organized is needed in a courier service. Files, receipts, letters, bills, work orders and other documents all need to be properly maintained.

Management and organizational skills are essential to a courier service business as all parcels and packages need to be delivered ON TIME. Owners of a courier business who will be doing the driving themselves will need to have strong navigational skills to ensure all items get to where they are headed without delay.

Experience Needed:
People with a background in the courier business - or any delivery service - is a plus. Those with limited experience with courier services can start with reading trade magazines and attending seminars and conferences. Courier business entrepreneurs could also sign up with various associations and learn from the people there.

Startup Requirements:
Opening a small courier service entails minimal startup costs. With a pickup truck, a telephone and a person to answer it, a courier service entrepreneur is pretty much all set. Basic equipment needed for a courier business include a pager system for communicating with the company's drivers, and multiple incoming telephone lines.

A big factor affecting budget is the AREA you plan to offer services. A small company can cater to the local community and its business district but offering courier services to other regions entails more investment in communications equipment, staff and vehicles.
