How to Start a Car Rental Business

The car rental business is an ideal long-term investment since there will always be customers coming from different places. The main idea is to rent cars to clients who are unable to drive their own for a number of reasons.

How to Get into the Car Rental Business

To get started, locate agencies or car companies that can provide you with your fleet for car rental. You may either set a contract with the company or purchase your own fleet (albeit the more expensive option). Determine the models you plan to rent as well as the size of your fleet.

Your car rental business will be more successful depending on its location since travelers and locals who temporarily cannot get their own cars are your primary clientele. Look for areas near airports and terminals or adjacent to busy commercial areas. High tourist areas are also great for a car rental business.

Skills Needed:
Looking well after your inventory is a must. It is important that you maintain the integrity of each car in your fleet, verify quotes, ensure that rented cars are returned safely, and others.

As the car rental business is competitive, marketing or advertising skills is also a plus. Advertise by putting out flyers or making tie-ups with travel agencies for potential customers.

Experience Needed:
You should know how to drive and operate your fleet and determine ways to safeguard your cars, minimize car expenses and make necessary repairs and maintenance. Some experience in licensing and contractual agreement will also help you negotiate well with the car company you prefer and the travel agencies you plan to tie-up with.

Startup Requirements:
It is recommended that you have a commercial agreement with a car company at first to minimize capital expenses. At least, until you gain more knowledge on the car rental business.

You need to pay for office and garage space, contract or agreement fees with the car company and travel agencies, licensing and branding of your business as well as miscellaneous items like initial gasoline, quotes and a system database for locating your fleet and receiving payments.
