WordPress.com is a hosted version of the open source weblog platform available at WordPress.org. The open source platform is an incredible tool for creating your own weblog. However, it does require a web host, a database and FTP client among others. As such, Wordpress.org is advisable for advanced users who have enough technical knowledge on web hosting and creating websites.
WordPress.com, however, is a great alternative to WordPress.org. It's a free, easy and quick way to start blogging without any technical know-how. For those who want to enjoy the WordPress blogging experience without all the technicalities of web hosting and web designing, WordPress is a great option.
Why Blog at WordPress.com?
Whether you want to have a personal website, an online journal, a business or an affiliate marketing website, WordPress can help you start with ease and without any cost. Especially if you are planning to establish an online business, a neatly designed and easy-to-navigate blog is the best way for you to launch your business online. Although you have other great alternatives, blogging at WordPress can give you some advantages. Consider these:
It is under very active development. New updates come out almost daily, which means you can always look forward to having a fresh and up-to-date blog.
Although optional paid upgrades are available, you can start and maintain a blog for free. Everything that it offers for free at present will remain free in the future. That's a guarantee!
It comes with great features including wide-ranging well designed themes. You can change your blog's current theme from professional-looking into funny and exciting with just a click of a button. Furthermore, each theme lets you rearrange and customize your sidebar using widgets.
It offers lots of privacy options including per-post password option.
It instantly updates your blog after changing it or editing your posts; there's no need to rebuild the entire blog and wait!
It guarantees fast and reliable service. It runs lots of secure servers in two datacenters (each has a copy of all data and uploaded files in your blog).
WordPress.com Features
There are plenty of reasons why you should blog at WordPress. If you aren't convinced by the abovementioned advantages, take a look at these practical and exceptional features:
- Integrated stats system - this feature lets me know exactly how many people are visiting my blog, which posts are most popular and where my blog readers come from.
- Categories and tags - WordPress lets me seamlessly organize my posts and tag them as I write them.
- Built-in rich text editor, Autosave, Spell-checker - the autosave feature is among WordPress' features I love the most. It's a real life saver!
- Import and Export Options - this is a great feature that lets me import posts and even comments from my old blog into my new WordPress blog. And yes, I can easily export my posts from WordPress to another blog through its export option (I probably won't use this feature though because WordPress is now my favorite hangout).
- Tag Surfer - this is a great feature that lets me look for and get in touch with bloggers with whom I share my interests.
- Akismet - this is a very helpful feature that blocks spammers from leaving spam comments on my blog.
- Pages - this feature lets me create a new page and instantly add a link to that page in my sidebar. With WordPress, I can conveniently create a website with a home page and lots of sub-pages.
- Multiple blogs in one dashboard - With WordPress, I can have as many blogs as I want!
- Multiple Authors - I can create blogs with multiple authors as well. It's a great feature that lets me and my friends meet in one “place.”
- Simplicity - Certainly, simplicity makes a strong impression and WordPress knows that very well.
The only thing we don't like about WordPress is that it doesn't have a tagbox function, but since WordPress is constantly upgraded, a tagbox is highly possible in the future. With or without it though, you'd surely enjoy blogging at WordPress!
