Lately, it seems that the Internet has spawned more overnight get-rich-quick schemes than real business e-books. Luckily, the Small Business Success Secrets e-book is an excellent example of the latter.
Although the advertisements at the end of each page would seem to fall under the get-rich-quick category (since ads in an e-book usually make it seem like the author's only intent is to push products), this e-book is so interesting and highly informative that one can very easily forgive the author for inserting ads at each page bottom.
It is excellently formatted in FAQ-style; the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) being those that address business issues encountered by people wanting to start their own enterprise or wish to work at home.
Moreover, it is packed with sound business advice and amusing, lesson-filled anecdotes that will make you want to read it regardless of whether yours is an online business or not.
Authored by Internet marketing and eBay expert Tim Knox, Small Business Success Secrets is written in an engaging style that does not weigh you down with too many hip catch phrases or jargon.
Knox may be the founder and CEO of three successful companies, but he is also a published author and syndicated columnist, and his skilled writing reflects that. He has not only mentored many work-at-home entrepreneurs, but those in more traditional corporate settings as well.
Some of the business issues covered in this e-book are:
-
Product viability
- Choosing the right business (and business name)
- Protecting yourself with copyrights and patents
- What your website says about your business
- Navigating Internet sales tax laws
- Crossing the line between buddy and boss
- Handling customer billing mistakes
- Achievements outweighing education and experience
It also provides practical advice on how to succeed on eBay, profiting from affiliate programs and turnkey websites, as well as interesting topics such as business lessons learned at the mall and a humorous take on handling SPAM (i.e., unsolicited e-mail).
Small Business Success Secrets and Questions
Some of the questions that Knox answers in this 65-page e-book probably come from readers of his syndicated column, his regular articles in www.entrepreneur.com, and his speaking engagements around the country.
The others probably come from reader feedback he actively solicits in his e-books so that the interaction can lead to a mutually beneficial exchange of ideas. Sometimes, it also leads to some very funny exchanges. (Check out Knox's answer to “What is the dumbest business question you've ever been asked?”)
Knox has a gift for answering readers in a witty manner and then dispensing shrewd advice gained from years of personal experience as an entrepreneur.
For example, in answer to a reader asking about the chances that his “amazing new product” will succeed, Knox replies that it worries him that the reader says, “there is nothing like it on the market.” Knox points out that it may really mean that there is no market for the product, and total lack of competition may mean the absence of demand.
He also answers questions regarding, say, the requirement for licenses when you work at home, pointing out that local zoning laws and property covenants will have to be considered.
By selecting questions with answers that lead to basic business principles, Knox has found a fresh way of presenting Small Business Success Secrets, which, judging by his following, are not really secrets anymore.
