The Importance of Targeting Your Prospects
What's the use of having thousands of people come to your website or store and leave empty-handed? It's a waste of time and effort.
The only people you should be attracting are those interested in what you have to offer targeted prospects! It's the only way to go.
Molly's Story
Molly had a financial information website. She could write good ads, and she placed those ads on high-traffic websites. She received many visitors, but the visitors didn't convert to sales. Molly's goal was HIGH TRAFFIC.
If Molly would have advertised on targeted sites and attracted only people who might be interested in what she has to offer, she would have done much better.
It's better to get 500 targeted prospects than it is to get 25,000 untargeted prospects.
Targeted Prospects or Nothing!
It's much better to do nothing than to try to market your business with an unfocused ad campaign. Focus like a laser, and pinpoint your target market. Here are three tips to help you target the right prospects.
1. Quality vs. Quantity
Set your focus only on quality, targeted prospects rather than quantity! Five hundred targeted prospects could result in a few hundred sales, compared to 25,000 untargeted prospects that could result in zero sales!
2. Target Your Writing
Address only targeted prospects. The more general you are when you write, the more people you can address but the less response you'll get. It's better to be specific than it is to try to get everyone with one shot.
For example: Attention new car buyers. Trade in your old car and get AT LEAST a $2,000 credit, no matter what shape your car is in! Drive, tow, or push your car in today and the $2,000 credit is yours with the purchase of a new car from our dealership. The above ad targets people who are looking for a new car and want to trade in their old car.
It doesn't target people who are thinking of buying a car and it doesn't target first-time car buyers. It's specific.
3. Target Your Ad Placement
Do some research to find out where the best place is to find your prospects. What do they do? What lifestyle do they have? What do they read? What are their hobbies? When you know these things about your prospects, then you'll be able to reach them in a wide variety of areas.

For example, if your prospects are teenagers who spend most of their summers at the beach, then for off-line exposure, you could look for areas around the beach to advertise.
These could include clubs and restaurants as well as other beach-area businesses. You could also sponsor beach parties and sporting events.
You could contact a popular radio show and have a prize giveaway or create a contest. The ideas are endless, but you have to start with proper targeting.
Find the best exposure and focus on quality, not quantity. What's the use of spending money on poor exposure? You're better off paying more money and getting the proper attention.
Successful marketing is one of the key challenges in running a successful business. Targeting ONLY those who are interested in what you have to offer will make your marketing efforts more successful.
That's the way I see it.
